What Happens When You Put the Wrong Fuel In?
Petrol in a Diesel Vehicle
This is the most common misfuelling mistake. Petrol acts as a solvent in a diesel system, stripping lubrication from the fuel pump and injectors. Even a small amount of petrol in a diesel tank can cause significant damage if the engine is run. The fuel system may need to be drained, flushed and inspected before the vehicle can be safely driven again.
Diesel in a Petrol Vehicle
Diesel nozzles are generally too large to fit a petrol filler neck, so this is less common — but it does happen. Diesel in a petrol engine can cause the engine to misfire, produce heavy smoke and stall. The fuel system will need to be drained and the vehicle inspected before driving.
AdBlue in the Fuel Tank
AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid) is sometimes accidentally added to the fuel tank instead of the AdBlue reservoir. This is a serious mistake that can cause significant damage to the fuel system and engine. Do not start the vehicle — call for assistance immediately.
